Why are Ground Effect Craft being developed?
Because our world is getting smaller and as a Global community people are calling out for faster, more efficient means of sea transport for both cargo and people.
Radacraft is a Wing in Ground Efect craft. A groiund effect craft can meet these challenges. It is nearly as fast as Aircraft but uses much less fuel, it's Marine based but can land and take off from ground or water. It flies but doesn't need an airport and it can carrry passengers or cargo to places where neither ships or planes could go before.
In the "Glory Days" of the Marine Industry everyone traveled by sea, because mile for mile it was the fastest, safest and most comfortable way to go. With the advent of aircraft, speed suddenly became the greatest issue even though the cost was some five times greater per kilo. As time has progressed the emotion has gone and cost/time analysis is how cargo movements are measured and to some extent people, without realizing it, do the same. Do I want to fly across the ocean and be there in two hours or take a ship and be there in twenty four hours and what will the cost be?
Marine Architects have agonized over this for nearly one hundred years, and proof of their determination is seen in the developments in this century of all manner of high speed marine craft. Hydrofoils, Hovercraft, Fast Monohulls, Catamarans, Surface Effect Ships and Very Slender Vessels to mention a few. None of these craft really filling the enormous void between ships and aircraft.
A unique group of pioneers from around the world have all recognized the need to reduce the hydrodynamic drag on the ships hull and yet not induce the drag of full flight. In most countries of the world these pioneers work dates back many decades and has just been quietly progressing until the time for its emergence was right. That time is now.
For all time man has wondered at the beauty and grace of the sea birds who seem to glide effortlessly for hours, even days without flapping their wings. Since man first took to the air himself he became aware that there was an area close to the surface where the craft would get more lift but had different handling characteristics than free flight, so instead of staying close to the surface for efficiency he designed aircraft to fly higher and move through "the screen" quickly.
Pilots flying bombers over France during World War 2 were well aware that if one of their engines was shot out that although normal flight was impossible they could descend almost to sea level and use the ground effect to support the plane enough to fly home on only one engine making allowances for the fact that conventional planes have some instability in Ground effect. Until recently socio-economic pressures on economies have not encouraged the development of this type of craft or sought solutions to the stability issues.
The advantages of wing in ground effect are such that a craft utilizing ground effect it is able to stay aloft for a longer period of time for less power requirements, this can be seen as an advantage in two major ways. The craft can carry a much greater pay load as the lifting surface is greater in ground effect, or cut down on fuel consumption for the same pay load, either way it equates to dollars in operators pockets in the final analysis.
One of the greatest psychological advantages of WIG craft as a mode of transport was expressed by a member of the Russian Ekranoplan flight test team, he said "the greatest comfort was knowing that where ever you go in a WIG craft your runway is directly below you". Even though flying was until now, the safest method of transport, people fear the potential of an accident much more in aircraft than in any other vehicle. WIG craft will now offer the speed of aircraft, at not only a lower price but also without the anxiety.
A W.I.G. craft is Marine classified under the IMO recommendations and thus certification costs are that of a Marine Survey not Aviation Certification there by enormously reducing the fixed development costs of the type.
A properly configured W.I.G craft can operate at up to 40% less fuel burn than an equivalent sized and loaded aircraft, this makes fast cheap marine transport a viable alternative to air transport, in an ever increasingly cost conscious global market place.
The Radacraft is a Wing-in-ground-effect craft, this means that it has been specially designed to operate in the Ground effect range, and to maximize the stability and fuel efficiency of this mode and to offer a platform that gives the flexibility of a Hovercraft, the speed of a Plane and fuel burn and overall cost analysis less than both.
